Downloading questions

Q: Why do I get an error message or a message that says "page (or URL, or Resource) not found"?
While trying to download our recipes, you may receive any of the following error messages:

  • The page could not be found (28).
  • There was an error processing a page. A file I/O error has occurred. The file connection timed out.
  • Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to MySQL server on raptor.drgnetwork.com (128).

Sometimes our server (the computer where our Web site is hosted) gets a lot of traffic, and as a result sometimes your request for a page may get dropped. You can try clicking on the Refresh (Mac/Windows Internet Explorer) or the Reload (Mac/Windows Netscape Navigator or Communicator) button.

You can also try clicking the "Back" button on your browser and then make your selection again.

Q: Why does it take so long before I see my recipe?
There are two possible reasons:

  1. You have a slow or congested connection to the Internet (a slow modem).
  2. There are too many other people on the site all trying to download recipes, or you are "surfing" the Web at a time when there are a lot of other people on the Web too.

Q: Why do I see ASCII characters, garbled information, etc. ... when opening a recipe?
This is probably a typographical error on our site. We would appreciate it if you would report it to us using this form.

General questions and answers about using this site

Q: Once I find a recipe, how do I print it?
You can print any recipe you find by simply clicking on the Printer Friendly button (it looks like a rolling pin) in the top right corner of the recipe. A seperate window will open, with a trimmed-down, printer friendly version of the recipe. All you have to do now is right click with your mouse (left click for users with a mouse that is set up for left handed use) and select print with your mouse.

Q: Tell me more about submitting recipe photos.

What kind of photos can I submit?
You can publish recipe photos for any recipe available on our site, even if it already has a photo. If your photo is selected, it will be displayed on the recipe detail page with a credit line.
How do I submit a recipe photo?
First find the recipe you have photographed, and select the 'Submit a Photo' link once you are logged in.
What happens to my photos after they are submitted?
Your photo will go through an editorial review process. If your photo is selected, it will be resized for display on HomeCookingMagazine.com and a credit line will appear below the photo indicating who submitted the selected picture. If your photo is not selected, it will be archived on our server and may be used at a later time.

Q: How do I use the conversion calculator?
You can use the conversion calculator by clicking on the "Conversion Calculator" link in the right hand navigation of the page. Make sure you are allowing pop-ups on our site if your browser utilizes a pop-up blocker.

A new window will pop up with a variety of conversions to choose from. Simply select the conversion you need (i.e. If you need to convert ounce to ml you would want to use the "Volume Fluid Conversion" section). Use the drop down box under each section of measurments to choose which units you would like to convert. Type in the number of units you wish to convert into the box located to the right of the drop down box and click on the "Convert" button. For example, if you want to convert 32 ounce's into ml's you would choose "ounce to ml" in the drop down box, type "32" in the box to the right of the drop down box and click on the convert button. The box to the right of the "Convert Button" will show the conversion of 32 ounces to ml.

Using WebTV, AOL or other browsers with this site.
We have designed the HomeCookingMagazine.com site to work with traditional computers running standard (Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) Web browsers. While we welcome all cooks, however they choose to visit us, we simply do not have the resources to support all the different forms of accessing the Internet.

Q: What do I do if I find a recipe that is incomplete or incorrect?
Please fill out our form, specifying the recipe name and location on our site.

Q: What is the best way to search on your site?
Currently the search applies only to the recipes. It will not reflect results from our Kitchen Helpers or Glossary sections. Start by using single words that might appear in the title, ingredients or instructions. Avoid using words that are very common like "mix."
